Learning the Alphabet through Play - ABC Ice Chalk

This is the second post in our Learning the Alphabet through Play series, and I'm so excited to share it!  The purpose of this series is to introduce letters and sounds through playful activities.  The focus is on the sensory aspect of each activity, and the learning will come when they are ready.

How to Make Frozen Alphabet Chalk Paint

Supplies:

• cornstarch
• water
• liquid watercolor paint or food coloring
• alphabet ice molds

Directions:  I made the frozen alphabet chalk using this basic chalk paint recipe.  To mix up the sidewalk chalk paint I combined equal amounts of water and cornstarch and added liquid watercolor paint before blending together with a whisk.  I mixed up each color and carefully poured it into the ice molds and popped it in the freezer overnight.  You could also make the alphabet chalk paint erupting ice chalk for an even more exciting alphabet activity.

As always I followed the leading of my boys during this activity.  Tank wanted to know each letter he was painting with, and he also named each color.

Peanut was more interested in the art and sensory aspect, so I left him to paint and play.  I still mentioned the letter names and sounds each time he picked up a new letter, but I didn't push anything.

When they were done painting Tank rinsed the chalk paint away with the hose.  I can't say enough how much I love how easily chalk paint cleans up!  If staining is a concern, test a small area before play.  We've never had an issue, but different surfaces will absorb paint differently.
