Puffy Paint Jack 'o Lanterns

Decorating Pumpkins with Puffy Paint

It's halfway through October, and we still haven't carved our pumpkins yet!  Halloween is going to be here before we know it.  We went to the pumpkin patch at the end of September, but this month is really flying by.  We got a couple big pumpkins for carving and we also got several small ones for painting.  To paint our pumpkins we used our homemade puffy paint recipe. Since the paint is washable, you can easily rinse the pumpkins in the case of mistakes.

No matter what the project is, using our homemade puffy paint is always a favorite for the boys.  I think it's the squeezy bottles.  Shh, don't tell them the squeezing is good for fine motor skills.  They think they are just having fun.

I think JZ (5) enjoyed sprinkling pouring glitter on the pumpkins most of all.

For some reason he really liked painting all the stems of the pumpkins.  He didn't understand why J-Bug (4) didn't want his stems painted.

You can see how the paint dried.  It wasn't as vibrant as it appeared when we were painting, but the pumpkins still turned out nicely.

Here is the simple recipe for homemade puffy paint.  I used washable tempura paint this time, so we had vibrant and festive colors.

  1. These are so pretty. I love the idea of decorating and not carving. The pumpkins last so much longer.

  6. I love the way the texture looks on the puff paint. The Jack-o-lantern has more character because it dripped a bit...I think it made it look even better. The glitter is lots of fun too.
