Yogurt Spice Painting - Toddler Sensory Play

I mentioned in my Sensory Pudding Paint post that yogurt is my baby paint of choice.  When each of my boys was very young I put a couple spoonfuls of plain yogurt on his tray to let him explore and get messy.  Sometimes I left the yogurt plain, and other times I added a few drops of food coloring.  I make my own yogurt using this recipe from One Good Thing.

Another way I love to let my little ones explore is through Yogurt Spice Painting.  I grab a few spices to add to plain yogurt and let them have at it.  I choose the spices based on which ones don't get used for cooking very often.  Here is the invitation I created for my twin toddlers (16 months) the other day:

Peanut eagerly reached for the container of fennel.

He felt each granule, smelled them, and even tasted them.

Tank dumped a few of the containers before exploring.  This is why I always set out a shower curtain from Dollar Tree when we do indoor sensory play.

He slowly started experimenting with the yogurt.

J-Bug (3) saw what his baby brothers were doing, and he joined in the fun.  He loved mixing the spices and creating a tasty concoction.

Taking cues from his big brother, Peanut started mixing up the yogurt.

After J-Bug finished adding the spices, he left the cookie sheet of yogurt and spices for the toddlers.

Tank was fascinated watching the mixture roll and drip down the cookie sheet.

If you are wondering what the purpose of this play is, I'd like to invite you to read a couple of posts from my Child's Play 101 series.  In my posts about Sensory Bins and Messy Play I wrote about the importance of these experiences in early childhood.

  6. My kids are older now but would still love this. I have never minded making messes, although I have one question: how do you get their pj/clothes off them without getting gooey yogurt on everything else? Do you just take them to the tub? Even though mine are all over 10 now, I'm stealing that shower curtain idea! Wish I had done it when they were small. PS. I found out that wet yogurt cleans up easier than dry.....
