Water Beads in the Grass

What to do with old Water Beads

For the past two months the big boys and I have played with water beads every single day.  We made a new batch of GLOWING water beads awhile back, and we keep those in a sensory bin for easy access whenever the boys are in the mood.  We've also had another batch in the backyard.  We store those in the sensory table.  Playing with water beads in water is a great way to stay cool in the summer heat while enjoying the wonderful texture of these little beads.

We discovered a new way to enjoy them by accident.  Actually, Tank (12 months) sort of led me to it.  When I put water beads in the baby pool for Tank and Peanut to explore, a few fell out, and Tank tried to retrieve them.  He reached in the grass for quite awhile.  When both babies were done in the pool instead of fishing the water beads out with a strainer like I usually do I dumped the entire pool into the grass.

JZ (5) and J-Bug (3) joined me in wriggling their toes through the squishy beads.  The wet grass and water beads made for quite a sensory experience.  We used as many adjectives to describe the sensation as possible:  squishy, slimey, wiggly, jelly like, bouncy, soft, rubbery, slippery, moist, smooth, etc.

Water beads are garden friendly, so we didn't bother to clean up.  How's that for an activity?  Sensory play without a mess to clean?  WIN!

Please note:  If you have pets or toddlers you might want to skip this activity.

  1. I love this idea. A great idea for multi sensory play

  2. That's where our beads end up when we play with them outside, too! We have only used the clear ones, but I have packages of coloured ones that I will have to bring out soon.
