Candy Corn Foam Dough Eruptions

Fall Recipe for Play - Erupting Candy Corn Foam Dough

We've been having the best time creating new fall recipes for play!  Our candy corn playdough and candy corn quick paints were such a hit, so I decided to make a candy corn dough recipe.  I've been wanting to make foam dough every since I saw it on Fun at Home with Kids.  They made gorgeous rainbow foam dough!  I decided that this would be the perfect time to try it out, and we made candy corn foam dough.  Better yet, we made eruptions with our candy corn foam dough!

How to Make Erupting Candy Corn Foam Dough

Directions:  I made three batches of foam dough in white, orange and yellow.  The traditional recipe for foam dough includes shaving cream and cornstarch.  I added baking soda to my recipe, so it would erupt.  For each batch I mixed shaving cream, cornstarch, baking soda and liquid watercolor paint in a big bowl.  I did not measure, but I roughly used 2 cups of shaving cream per 1/2 cup of cornstarch and 1/2 cup of baking soda.  I really did not measure though.  I think foam dough is a forgiving recipe.  If it is too slimy and runny add cornstarch.  If it is too crumbly add shaving cream.  I used my hand to mix each batch and get it to the desired consistency.  Then I set up a candy corn shaped invitation to play.

My boys eagerly started playing with the dough.  It has such a fun consistency and texture!  I took a few photos then stuck my hands in it too.

The fun fall colors looked gorgeous when blended together.

After they played in the candy corn dough for almost an hour I brought out the squeezy bottles full of vinegar.

They were ecstatic watching the eruptions!  I don't know if they shaving cream was the magic ingredient or what, but these eruptions were bigger and foamier than we've ever made.

I refilled the squeezy bottles several times until every last bit of foam dough had fizzed.

The foaming dough created a new sensory material for them to explore.  Please be sure children know not to touch their eyes when playing with baking soda and vinegar.

  8. Thank You for your wonderful ideas. I was inspired by your candy activities post and have included that into my foam play dough party with my kids and it was a blast! The foam effects were surreal with the jelly towers. Your eruption would be awesome but i didn't have courage to that for now...ha. So i was contented to have the feeble attempt of a fizzing tablet sample that i had from somewhere. Great ways to use them instead of discarding them! I have linked your posts on your candy foam playdough and candy activities at
