Chocolate Chip Buttermilk Scones - Baking with My Boys

I found this recipe on one of the blogs I follow.  We make these scones almost weekly now.  They are DELICIOUS.

JZ and J-Bug are great in the kitchen.  Of course they have little accidents here and there, but mostly they know how to be careful, measure accurately, and stir gently to avoid food splatters.

They join me in the kitchen on a regular basis.  They LOVE to be a part of the cooking process.  It makes them proud to eat something they took part in making.

Of course it slows down the process for me and makes a messier kitchen, but it's worth it.  By adding 10-15 minutes to the preparation time I am getting these priceless memories with my older boys, and they are learning skills that I hope stick with them for a lifetime.

My husband bakes better than I do.  Much better.  He can taste a dough or batter and know what needs to be added to make it just right.  He can whip up a tasty dinner based on what we have in the pantry.  I am the one following a recipe step by step, measuring each and every ingredient, and half of the time my meals still don't turn out as yummy!

Do you want to know how he got so good?  He watched his mom and spent countless hours by her side in the kitchen.  Do you think he would enjoy cooking if his mom has shooed him out of the kitchen, or if she was more concerned about messes than the valuable lessons her son was learning?  Have I mentioned he was one of NINE kids?  If she did it with nine, certainly I can make time when I only have four, right?

I hope my boys grow up to enjoy cooking, and that they, like their father, take turns preparing meals in their houses.

Okay, we've made these scones a half a dozen times, and I swear this is the ugliest they've ever looked, LOL.  Of course that happens when I am photographing them, right?  They still tasted amazing. If this was a food blog I'd probably make these again tomorrow and take better pictures of the plate.  Thankfully it's not a food blog.  It's about the kids.  :-)

It's not my recipe to share, so I'm not going to type it out.  I'd like to invite you to check it out over at Skinny Taste.  I substitute Blue Agave Nectar for the sugar and wheat berries (ground in my Vitamix) for the flour, although we were (gasp!) out of wheat berries this time.  Maybe that is why they look different.  I don't sprinkle any sugar on top, and I use 1/2 cup of chocolate chips instead of 3/4.  I've always done it that way, and they taste plenty sweet.

Enjoy!
