All About Me Edible Face - Healthy Lunch or Snack

All About Me Snack

JZ has come to expect a fun snack or meal to go along with each unit study we do.  For our All About Me unit I planned on making pancakes and setting out cut up fruit and whipped cream for the boys to decorate and make faces.  Before I had the chance I came across this post from No Twiddle Twaddle as part of our Lois Elhert Virtual Book Club blog hop.  I am so happy I saw Bethany's cute snowman dinner.  My kids get enough sweets and treats, so I do my best to keep our meals and snacks healthy.  Bethany's post inspired me to create a healthy All About Me snack.

To build our Edible Faces I set out a tortilla face and included several healthy toppings:  red pepper, cucumber, yellow tomatoes, bananas, carrots, hummus and raisins.  The boys helped me with the prep.  JZ (5) has become quite the pro at peeling and grating carrots.  J-Bug (3) is helpful when it comes to grating, although he thinks it's much faster to just take a bite of each carrot.

JZ surprised me by needing a bit of prompting to get started.  Once I threw out a few suggestions he quickly got to work.

J-Bug wanted hummus all over his.  After spreading the hummus he put a few cucumbers and bananas randomly all over the torilla.  Then he added a couple tomatoes and said they were, "his boogies."  That's my boy.

This lunch was a hit for many reasons:
1.  It encouraged creativity.
2.  It promoted healthy eating.
3.  It stimulated the senses.
4.  It created opportunities to practice practical life skills.

JZ's face turned out quite adorable if I do say so myself.  I love the sprinkles of grated carrots for his hair.  J-Bug's was cute, too.  Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to snap a photo, because I was busy redirecting Tank (14 months) to prevent him from messing up their creations.

Be sure and visit No Twiddle Twaddle to see the post that inspired this wonderful lunch lesson.

  2. I love the way that you put the faces on tortillas and used more colors! Thanks so much for the kind comments, Allison. You just really made my day!

  3. Very cute and healthy! I love this idea! I've done Mr. Potato Head Pancakes before and they recently made Jack-O-Lantern sandwiches with raisins. I always have a couple tortillas left over after taco/fajita dinners, so this may have to go on the lunch menu next time!
