As promised, I had a COLD, rainbow activity planned for JZ and JM. I made ice bricks for the boys to build with. I used Perfect Cube Ice Trays
and added a few drops of food coloring to each cube for a colorful experience. I included tongs
in the sensory bin for the boys to construct with if they so desired.

JZ (no surprise) was put off by how cold they were, but JM loved the ice blocks.
JZ asked what would happen if he "burned" them, so I let him find out.
Please note: JZ has used a lighter
many times, and he only gets to use one supervised. He knows the guidelines he must follow while holding one and that it will be taken away if he doesn't stick to the rules.

JM kept touching the ground where the ice had melted and licking his hands. So gross.
When JM lost interest I filled two containers with warm water and suggested he put an ice cube in each to watch it melt and change the color of the water.
Then he started dumping, scooping and pouring.
He was in his element.
I probably could have skipped the hassle of making the ice and given him a bin of water, LOL.
What a great idea! I have a question, does the food coloring in the ice stain the concrete? I have seen alot of ice play with food coloring and want to try it but nervous it will stain the sidewalk. (I still have paint on my sidewalk from years ago so I try to avoid anything too permanent ; )
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't leave permanent colors, but it does last for awhile. My husband has a power washer, so I've never worried too much about it. You can really water down the coloring, or you could use liquid water colors. You could also add a little bit of Dawn detergent to the water before freezing. Dawn gets everything out, lol.
